NASA's gleaming silver "Astrovan" sits ready to take the astronauts the nine miles from their crew quarters to the shuttle rocket at Pad 39A. The modified Airstream motor home has been ferrying shuttle crews since 1984, partly at the insistence of newer astronauts who wanted to share in the history of this vehicle that been the traditional transport of the astronauts who came before them. In that time it has racked up only 24,000 miles.
