In 1961 Aerojet General optioned 74,335 acres of land about 50 miles south of Miami in south Dade County, Florida, to develop and build soldi fuel rocket motors it hoped to sell to NASA as part of its developing Moon program. Aerojet failed to get the NASA contract and ultimately abandoned the site; later selling the land back to the State of Florida, where it is now a wilderness preserve.
