In 1961 Aerojet General optioned 74,335 acres of land about 50 miles south of Miami in south Dade County, Florida, to develop and build soldi fuel rocket motors it hoped to provide to NASA as part of its emerging Moon program. NASA decided against using solid fuels for its Moon rockets, leading Aerojet to ultimately abandon the site; later selling the land back to the State of Florida.
